JANE SHILLING'S TV CHOICE

MEN ABOUT THE HOUSE 9PM, BBC4 Last night we considered fathers in literature -- hapless, ineffectual figures, most of them. Tonight it's the turn of dads in TV sitcoms. Admittedly the sitcom dad (such as Reggie Perrin, played by Leonard Rossiter, above), unlike his frequently absent literary counterpart, has to put in an appearance, so that we can laugh at him. But half a century of TV comedy finds the pater a beleaguered figure, reduced to asserting his authority by keeping, like Replica Lancel Handbags Jim Royle, a firm grip of the remote control.

EASTENDERS 8PM, BBC1 While sitcom fathers are much at the mercy of their unruly families, soap operas still harbour a few rare specimens of the Victorian paterfamilias in all his alarming splendour. Stenders alone has featured Johnny Allen of lamented memory, Phil Mitchell and now Godfearing Lucas, whose grim secret lies entombed beneath a fragile sapling. "If Liz omega watches starts to dig Owen up, it'll finish me and Lucas," remarks Denise. This is known as dramatic irony.

PLAYHOUSE: LIVE 9PM, SKY ARTS 2 Sinead Cusack and Pippa Bennet- Warner star in Toby Frow's production of Frank McGuinness's Crocodile. In this eloquent two-hander a nameless girl who has committed an unspeakable crime meets a lawyer who has dark secrets of her own. As their stories emerge the balance of power between the two women shifts.

THE UNTOLD GREAT FIRE OF LONDON 8PM, CH4 The British habit of reflex xenophobia, so strikingly in evidence during James Corden's World Cup Live discussions, has roots in our history. Tonight's Manolo Blahnik Shoes "untold" history considers the conspiracy theories that spread as quickly as the flames of the Great Fire of London. The day after the fire began, people began to suspect that the conflagration was no accident, so our old enemies, the Dutch and the French, got done over. Sound familiar?
