New junior secures derby win

When the final results of the Scot Laliberte Invitational cross country meet are posted this afternoon, take note. There's a good chance you'll see many of the same names at the top of the results of the state championship meets later this fall.

"You look back the last few years, it's a good barometer of who the talent is," Cony cross country coach Shawn Totman said.

Last year's girls winner, Abby Mace of Maranacook, went Formula 1 Replica Watches on the win the Class B state championship in dominating fashion, finishing more than a minute ahead of her nearest competition. Former Cony runner Luke Fontaine placed sixth in the boys Class A meet after winning the Laliberte last year.

Mace, a junior, will be on hand at Cony High School in Augusta to try to defend her title in the race she's already won twice.

The Scot Laliberte Invitational is a preseason meet named in honor of a former Cony runner who was killed in a car accident in 2000. The race is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. with the varsity race. The junior varsity race will follow.

The Laliberte race combines girls and boys scores to determine one overall team winner. Falmouth High School won the team title last year.

Tom Wells, the former Cony cross country coach who founded the race, said this year there is no clear-cut favorite among the teams.

"I have no idea. It's anybody's race," Wells said. "It's a good preview (of the season), and it's a fun race. The kids are excited to see each other."

Twenty-four teams are signed up for this year's Laliberte Invitational, including some that have never participated before.

"Hall-Dale is coming for the first time," Wells said.

The course will be slightly different than last season. The sewer-line portion of the trail was taken out, and this year's course soccer jerseys is basically a big loop through the woods between Cony High School and Hodgkins School, Wells said.

Wednesday's heavy rain didn't damage the trails, Wells said. The new course will make more of the finish accessible to spectators.

"They're in pretty good shape," he said. "There will be about a half-mile at the finish that is spectator-friendly."

The change in the course also shortened the race to a 4K, or approximately 2.4 miles. It's still a challenging, hilly course, Totman said.

"It's a pretty good test, I think. Almost every team has been here before, so they know what to expect," Totman said.

While the Laliberte Invitational has become a good preview of the upcoming season, Totman said he considers it the most fun meet of the season.

Oklahoma women combine PR, soc

When they formed H&L Media Partners less than a year ago, Cyndy Hoenig and Heather Lytle knew they were combining professional experience in public relations and social media from different generations.

The combination of talents from different generations has worked well, Hoenig and Lytle both said.

"Where her talents are so different from mine, they mesh so well," Lytle said.

In July, Hoenig and Lytle combined their experience to release their first online book - 550 PR, Marketing & Social Media Tips.

Hoenig said she posted approximately five public relations tips daily on Twitter. Lytle had been offering social media public relations tips.

"Heather suggested combining our tips into the book," Hoenig said. "I had about 400 of the tips and Heather had about 150 so we combined them into the book."

The book of tips was created as a reference for business owners and executives. Topics include how to elevate corporate profiles and make the most of social media with the 550 marketing tips - all in 140 characters or less.

"For businesses to be successful today they need both traditional and social media," Lytle said. "The way we looked at the book was as a reference for business owners so they can go through it tip by tip and get their minds around ways they can use traditional PR with social media."

The partners are pleased with the response.

"We are building this new company," Hoenig said. "We decided we needed to offer something to people for free. Social media is about cultivating relationships."

The book has been noticed outside Oklahoma.

Lytle and Hoenig will be traveling to Atlanta in late October to the International Association of Business Communicators' Southern Regional Conference, where they will tell participants about the 550 PR, Marketing & Social Tips.

"It will be an opportunity for us to tell them what we do and the services we provide," Lytle said. "The generational perspective is so unique."

The Southwest Washingtons path to creating jobs in the renewable energy sector will be built on a series of thoughtful decisions it should start making now, according to Dick Sheehy, an expert in choosing sites for renewable energy facilities.

Sheehy spoke on Wednesday to more than 60 attendees of an event held by the Columbia River Economic Development Council at the Heathman Lodge in red quilted handbag Vancouver.

The region must acknowledge the decline of oil and gas as cheap sources of energy, model successful government incentive programs and sell itself to solar and wind manufacturers in a targeted way.

Sheehy, director of advance planning in the Portland office of the global engineering and construction firm CH2M Hill, said the world economy will demand renewables as supplies of oil and gas are overtaken by demand, and as the price of both fossil fuels rises.

We are on the downward curve as far as hydrocarbons, Sheehy said. We will run out of hydrocarbons.

Unless we want to go back to a wood and steam economy, Sheehy said, we need to encourage manufacturers of solar and wind power to expand by providing successful incentives. Governments in Oregon, Ontario, Canada, and Germany have done this for years.

Youve got to be real specific and targeted, Sheehy added. You dont want to market Vancouver and Clark County to everybody.

Sheehy said Vancouver, Clark County and the Pacific Northwest as a whole all have strong selling points to lure renewable energy companies to the region, including:

* The availability of land.
