Recall issued on Miravalle pep

SOUTH EL MONTE - Miravalle Foods Inc. is recalling 37,318 pounds of peppers because they could be contaminated with salmonella, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.

The potential for contamination was noted after an FDA lab analysis of a random sample revealed the bacteria's presence.

The South El Monte company's Miravalle Chile California- and Miravalle Chile Nuevo Mexico-brand peppers were distributed between March 15 and May 6 to customers in California, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Nebraska, Nev-

ada, North Carolina and Replica Ulysse Nardin Watches Oregon.

"Everything is under control and we were able to detect the customers who had the problem," Miravalle spokeswoman Carmen Debora said Monday. "We're working with the FDA on this, and it was a voluntary recall."

So far, no illnesses have been linked to the peppers. And that's a good thing, according to FDA spokesman Ira Allen. "The worst way for us to find out about this would be when illnesses have been reported and the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) notifies us," he said.

The recalled peppers were distributed to a small group of customers through direct delivery, distributors and retail stores. They were sent in three-ounce, six-

ounce, eight-ounce and 16-ounce clear packages.

Allen said his federal agency often assists companies in issuing recall notices.

"They are required by law to let us know within 24 hours electronically if there is a potential food safety problem," he said.

Production of Miravalle's product has been suspended while the FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.
