CAPTAIN Paul Goodwin pulled no punches in his assessment of Staffordshire's 10-wicket Minor Counties Championship humiliation at the hands of Suffolk.

His team turned in a woeful performance to lose the Eastern Division encounter at Ipswich School with a day left.

It followed defeat at Bedfordshire in their previous fixture when the home side chased down a mammoth 402 for victory on the final day.

Goodwin was scathing about his side's latest performance, and says they must learn some hard lessons.

The Knypersley wicketkeeper and batsman said: "Some of the shot selection was mindless. There was no thought process and we made some poor decisions.

"Bowling-wise, we are lacking control. There are plans in place for every batsman, but we are not executing them.

"It is a similar story in the field. Teams are running us ragged and the players need to have a good think about how they approach games.

Staffordshire struggled from the start against Suffolk and could only post 273-9. The hosts replied with 432-6 and then bundled out Staffordshire for 159.

Goodwin said: "We were never at the races and didn't look like putting them under pressure.

"Our first innings score was about 50 short and even then we had to scrap to get that, otherwise it could have been even more embarrassing.

"The game isn't meant to be easy, but we are making it hard for ourselves."

Staffordshire's cause has not been helped by selection problems this season.

New signings Chris Taylor and Mark Lawson have been regularly unavailable, while a number of senior Replica Baume & Mercier Watches players have also been missing because of injury and work commitments.

Goodwin added: "All teams go through peaks and troughs, and we are certainly in a trough.

"We have a young, inexperienced side which is struggling to compete, but we can't be too critical because we are asking a lot of young players."

Staffs' next game is against Lincolnshire at Longton from July 18 to 20.
