The Fourth of July weekend, traditionally a time to celebrate and relax with family and friends, but tonight, there is news that speaks to the reality for so many families on this holiday weekend. A growing number of Americans simply cannot find a job. Today, the Labor Department said 125,000 jobs were lost in June. The rate of unemployment actually dropped to 9.5 percent which, at first, may sound like good news, but it is not.

NBC`s Savannah Guthrie has been digging into the numbers. She joins us now from the White House.

Good evening, Savannah.

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE, NBC NEWS WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Good evening, Kate. BARACK OBAMA, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: We are headed in the right direction. We`re not headed there fast enough for a lot of Americans. We`re not headed there fast enough for me either.

GUTHRIE: Congress headed for its Fourth of July recess without passing an extension of unemployment benefits, as today`s job report showed more Americans out of work. The June numbers, a net loss of 125,000 jobs, mainly because nearly a quarter of a million temporary census jobs were phased out. The private sector did add 83,000 jobs, but it was fewer than expected. And though the unemployment rate fell to 9.5 percent, even that was more dark cloud than silver ling.

The government measures unemployment by counting those Jimmy shoes who are still looking for work. The rate went down because more people simply gave up.

STEVE LIESMAN, CNBC ANALYST: It`s a middling report. We still have job growth. We have had six months of job growth. But it`s nowhere near the kind of numbers we would hope for, and that you would expect coming out of the deep recession that we had.

GUTHRIE: Alarm is growing that there could be a double-dip recession, the name experts give to an economy that begins to recover only to slide backwards.

Goodwin Mistakes left Staffs i

Staffordshire's cause has not been helped by selection problems this season.

Recall issued on Miravalle pep

SOUTH EL MONTE - Miravalle Foods Inc. is recalling 37,318 pounds of peppers because they could be contaminated with salmonella, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.

The potential for contamination was noted after an FDA lab analysis of a random sample revealed the bacteria's presence.

The South El Monte company's Miravalle Chile California- and Miravalle Chile Nuevo Mexico-brand peppers were distributed between March 15 and May 6 to customers in California, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Nebraska, Nev-
