Ammanford make it tough, but S

AMMANFORD lost by four wickets to runaway leaders Sully at the Park on Saturday.

In the absence of captain Alun Evans, Matthew Fisher took the reins and won the toss, electing to bat.

They lost Rhydian Harris almost immediately and, with the score on 31, Fisher (13) joined him back in the pavilion.

Steffan Jenkins and Craig Maloney made slow but steady progress against the bowling of Glamorgan's Alex Wharf and Mike O'Shea, reaching 107 in 35 overs before Jenkins (18) became Sully's third victim.

Two further wickets fell in three overs, but Rhys Davies (21) and Andrew Salter stemmed the stream of returning batsmen with a face- saving partnership of 69.

Salter was out for 49 and Ammanford finally capitulated on the last ball for a total of 189.

O'Shea and Richard Ready took three wickets each, while Wharf 's single victim cost just 17 runs in 10 overs.

Sully's reply got away to a flying start thanks to openers Ryan Sylvester and O'Shea, who put on 45 in the first six overs.

When Maynard trapped Sylvester lbw for 16, Glamorgan's Mike Powell joined O'Shea and they took the score on to 83 before Powell (19) was bowled by Salter.

Ammanford enjoyed a brief period of hope as four further wickets fell but, needing only 72 runs with half their overs remaining, Sully took the sensible route to victory.

Jamie Sylvester (43no) and Ready (38no) reached their target comfortably.

Salter (3-50) was the pick of Ammanford's bowlers. Maynard (2- 62) took some punishment while Fisher (1-37) and Harris (0-21) were more economical.

Next week, Ammanford travel to Swansea in the league, followed by a long trip to North Wales on Sunday when they take on Hawarden in the semi-final of the Welsh Cup.

Ammanford seconds travelled to Sully with a team depleted by holidays.

Sully took advantage to reach 290-6, despite being slowed in the middle of their innings by the father and son spin pairing of Jeff and 13-year-old Jamie Evans. Kieran Vijay took a creditable 3-50.

In reply Ammanford found it impossible to keep up with the asking rate, but batted hard to force a draw with four wickets standing. Rhys Culley (51), George Harvey (45) and Scott Maynard (27no) were Ammanford's main run-getters as they finished 100 runs behind.

Ammanford's under-12 match at Llangennech was played on a wet, slow wicket.

The visitors batted with great maturity, reaching 90-2. Wicketkeeper Jack Isaac top-scored with 14.

Llangennech's approach was somewhat less disciplined, and they only managed a total of 15 runs between them, six of the eight Ammanford bowlers claiming victims.

A friendly against Llanwrda last Tuesday afforded the opportunity of blooding new players, and though Llanwrda managed to reach 90 runs, they were easily surpassed by the Ammanford batsmen for a comfortable 14-run victory.

Ammanford's under-11s are League A champions despite not playing against Dafen last Sunday due to the opposition's inability to raise a team.

They play Ynystawe next Sunday in the League semi-final play- offs.
